Mary Elwell

May 18, 1925 — December 22, 2021

Revere

Mary Mozelle Cook Elwell, age 96 of Revere Missouri passed away on December 22, 2021, at Clark County Nursing Home. She was born May 18, 1925, in Columbia, Missouri. The daughter of Henry Price and Grace Garland (Christy) Cook.

Mary wed Floyd Johnson Elwell in Kahoka, Missouri on January 30, 1946. Together they had two children: first their daughter Ruth, then their son Stanley. Mary was left to raise both children on her own after her husband’s untimely passing when Ruth and Stanley were just 3 and 1. Despite the difficulties, Mary was the absolute spark of life. She was the Postmaster in Revere and well known throughout the county for her friendly and kind nature. An accomplished pianist, Mary was aptly named “Grandma Piano” by her grandchildren. Grandma Piano was just one of several monikers she earned. As a writer for the Hometown Journal and the Media, Mary went by the pen name “The Ancient One” for her regular article – The Revere Coffee Gang News. A devoted member of the Revere Community Church, Mary taught Sunday School, sharing her faith with generations of youth. She performed with the “Country Cousins” Square-dancing band and participated in the “Country Comes Home” talent shows and several community plays at the Revere High School. She delighted in organizing and performing for these much-anticipated charity fundraising events. Her love of giving was also reflected in the beautiful, custom Christmas Stockings she handcrafted and gifted throughout her life. Her joys in life were in travelling, giving to others, and playing cards and games like Four Point Pitch. She delighted in nature and animals of every kind. Her music and memories will never be forgotten by her loving family and friends who cherished her dearly.

Mary is survived by her daughter Ruth (Gary) Stowe of Palmyra, Missouri, son Stanley (Barb) Elwell, of Revere Missouri; Grandchildren Brian (Lesley) Elwell of Overland Park, Kansas, Rob (Jennifer) Elwell of Melbourne, Florida, Bill Elwell of Germantown Hills, Illinois, and Wesley (Freda McGee) Swank of Lenoir, North Carolina; great-grandchildren Alexis, Isabella, Arianna, Benjamin, Addison, and Andrew; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather Leonard Johnson, her in-laws Frank and Effie Elwell, as well as her two brothers: Jack (Jane) and Richard (Marie Sawyer) Cook.
