Kahoka

Bernadine Kerner of Kahoka, Missouri passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Eastview Manor Care Center in Trenton, Missouri.

Bernadine Cleda Kerner (94), the daughter of Grover C. and Susan M. (Cochenour) Parsons, was born August 12, 1927, in Clark County MO. Bernadine graduated from Kahoka High School in 1945 and went directly into the workforce to help fill the labor shortage during the war.

On August 25, 1946, she was united in marriage to Donald J. Kerner, at the Methodist Church in Kahoka.

She began her working career with Wiss & Wiss in the late 40’s. From 1957 to 1964 she was a bookkeeper and payroll clerk for Brooks Construction in Kahoka. Afterwards she worked for several firms in insurance. She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church, and enjoyed reading, crocheting, and quilting.

Bernadine worked her entire life, always keeping busy. She loved reading, gardening, and canning, and she was very active with the women’s group at the Kahoka Methodist Church, making noodles and assorted baked goods for various charities and local fundraisers. When she wasn’t baking or cooking, she was a prolific handcrafter, be it quilting, crochet, knitting, or embroidery, her hands were rarely idle. She was a good friend, and a good neighbor to all who knew her.

Besides her parents, and husband Donald of 56 years, Bernadine was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pamela in 1948, and siblings Eugene, Madeline, Russell, Lester, Craig, and Max.

Bernadine is survived by one sister, Shirley of Belle, Missouri; two children, Charles (wife Teresa) of Kahoka; Daniel of Columbia, Missouri; three grandchildren: Joseph of Kahoka, Vanessa of Independence, Missouri; and Jacob (Monica) of Columbia, Missouri; and great-granddaughter Hailey Kerner of Independence.

Bernadine will be accorded cremation rites as per her wishes, with a graveside service to be planned at a later date.
