Virgie A Courtney, 91, of Kahoka, entered eternal Glory at 12:30 am, Monday, July 10, 2023, peacefully at the Clark County Nursing Home.

Virgie was born on October 7, 1931, in Williamstown, MO to Gilbert and Beulah (Dice) Young.  Virgie married her high school sweetheart Allen Courtney on June 21, 1953, at the First Baptist Church in Kahoka. Their marriage was blessed with 3 children Debbie, Dena, and Kris.

Virgie is survived by her beloved children Debbie Farrell of Franklin, Iowa, Dena (Chuck) Shaull of Homestead, Iowa and Kris Courtney of Kahoka, Mo. 3 grandchildren Timothy Farrell, Brooke (Ryan) Livingstone and Cole (Taylor) Courtney, 2 sisters in-law, JoAn Courtney and Elsie Young, and 1 brother in-law, Gail Walker, as well as several nephews and nieces.

Family and Friends loved her Fried Fish in the (Cast Iron fish skillet), corn pudding that was her mother’s recipe, and her mouth-watering potato salad.  Virgie’s grandchildren loved zucchini bread and cookies.  Everyone loved pies with the wonderful flaky crust. One church member said of her deep-dish apple pie “Now that’s what I call a Pie”!  Although she made quite a variety of pies, cookies, brownies, cakes and Christmas candies.  Virgie was a talented embroiderer & seamstress including making prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, mending and enjoyed scrapbooking.  Virgie was a service to the Lord:  She did birthday ministry and would send many birthday cards.  She made picture books from calendars for many children and residents at the Nursing Home, also serving the church through Awana youth group program and bible school.  Virgie was a Sunday school teacher for 2- & 3-year olds. “Children are like sponges absorbing what they see and hear.  They know more than you think, and you don’t know what’s going to come out of their mouths.”

Virgie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Allen, 2 brothers, Kenneth and Keith, 2 sisters, Verena Yeager and Lorena Walker, 1 sister in-law Jeanne Young, 3 brother in-laws Donald Courtney, Charles Yeager, and Craig Walker, 1 nephew, Mark Courtney, and 2 nieces, Patty (Yeager) Coffman and Charlotte Yeager.  

Funeral services for Virgie will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, July 17, 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Kahoka. Comforting words given by Matt Gutting.  Interment will follow at the Kahoka Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 16th, 2023, from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home in Kahoka.  Memorial contributions in memory of Virgie are suggested to the First Baptist Church Kahoka Missionaries outreach or The Franklin Graham ministry Samaritan’s purse.
