Skye Jean Lucas, 72, of Fort Madison, Iowa, passed away at 1:05 pm at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospital in West Burlington, Iowa.

 

She was born on April 8, 1951, in Fort Dodge Iowa, the daughter of the late Charles & Fernette (Stewart) Smith. Skye married Donald Lucas on November 18, 1972, in Maryville, Missouri and he survives.

 

Skye worked for Shaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison for 33 years until her retirement. She was an active international member of the Jaycee’s in Iowa and received the Jaycee Senator’s Award for her community service. Skye was instrumental in organizing the Kiddie parade in Fort Madison. She was known for being a supporter of women’s rights and was one of the first women to encourage female membership in several social organizations, including the Jaycees.  Skye was a member of the Republican Party. She was an accomplished square dancer and would often compete nationally in Salt Lake City, Utah. Gone with the Wind was her favorite movie. She enjoyed collecting snowman figurines, celebrating Halloween and black cats. She enjoyed playing billiards and was on several pool leagues throughout her life.

 

In addition to her husband of 51 years, Don, Skye is survived by an adopted daughter; Myrissa (Jamie) Meyer of Fort Madison, Iowa, three sisters; Susan (Jon) Boston of Marshalltown, Iowa, Sally (Henry) Caron of Wisconsin and Sherrie Smith of Kansas, several nieces & nephews, her dogs; Annie Myrissa, Sammy & her beloved “granddog” Dixie. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother in-law; Billy Franklin Lucas.

 

In accordance with Skye’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Memorial services honoring her life will be conducted at a later date. The Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home of Kahoka has been entrusted with the care and arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Skye are suggested to the family.
