Opal Nixon

October 15, 1935 — September 20, 2025

Kahoka

Opal Nixon, 89, of Kahoka, passed away at 8:17 am on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. Opal was born to Lawrence and Hazel (Courtney) Brewer, on October 15, 1935. She attended Lawrence School until the middle of 7th grade when she transferred to Revere High School where she graduated with the Class of 1953.

Opal worked for a short time at Chrisman Grocery Store in Revere. She also worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa as a nurse’s aid. She married her high school sweetheart, Carroll Nixon, on December 20, 1953, while he was in the Navy. After their marriage, she went to live in Rhode Island to be close to where Carroll was stationed. After his discharge, they moved to the family farm where they lived and raised their family until 2008. It was then that they moved into Kahoka.

While there, Opal worked for close to 30 years as an Activity Coordinator and Social Director at the Clark County Nursing Home. Some of Opal’s loves were gardening, raising flowers, and cooking for her family. She loved being active and involved with her Kahoka Christian Church family, and she took pleasure in crocheting, shopping, and going to yard sales. Her family was her pride and joy. She loved all of the times they could be together, especially the many sporting events they attended throughout the years. She was very proud of being both a grandma, and great grandma. Opal was an active member of the Daughters of Rebekah, Tuesday Club, CWF (where she served as the current president), and teacher Elder at Kahoka Christian Church. Opal also made the communion bread for services every Sunday. Opal requested that her obituary end with this message:

“I’ve had a good life because of Dad and all of you. I love you all so much.”

Opal is survived by her son, Kevin (Tina) Nixon, daughter-in-law, Gayla Nixon, wife of her late son (Kent); grandchildren, Kendra (Danny) Hostetter, Kale (Katrina) Nixon, Jenna (Mitch) Cook, Matt (Stephanie) Nixon, Amanda (Doug) Dodds, and Zach (Olivia) Nixon, 13 great grandchildren, and many other relatives and close friends who will deeply miss her presence in their lives. Among them is Shawn Webster, whom she loved like a son.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Carroll Nixon; sons Jay and Kent Nixon; brothers Duane Brewer, Romaine Brewer, Richard “Dick” Brewer; and her sister Bettie Nichols.

A funeral service for Opal will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the Kahoka Christian Church, in Kahoka, Missouri. Pastor Rick Addison will officiate.
