NORMAN R. WASHBURN

Norman Russell Washburn, age 86, of Kahoka, MO, died Sunday, March 14, 2004 in

Columbia Regional Hospital in Columbia, MO.

He was born August 24, 1917 in Keokuk, IA, a son of Russell Stephen Seth and Viva Louise Dunn Washburn.

On June 30, 1938 he was united in marriage to Doris Eileen Van Dever in the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, IA. She preceded him in death on December 22, 1997.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda D. Courtney and her husband, O. Edwin, of Henley, MO, and Darla J. "Shorty" Graham and her husband, John, of Maple Park, IL; seven grandchildren: Scott D. Courtney and his wife, Kathie, of Canton, OH, Todd A. Courtney and his wife, Kat, of University Heights, OH, Brett E. Courtney and his wife, Nikki, of Jefferson City, MO, Beth A. Layman and her husband, Scott, of North Aurora, IL, Amn. 1st Class Amy S. Graham of Hanscom Air Force Base, MA, Eric N. Graham of Maple Park, IL and Megan E. Graham of Carol Stream, IL; four great grandchildren, Emma Courtney of University Heights, OH, Logan Courtney of Jefferson City, MO, and Zachary Graham Layman and Maddison Layman both of North Aurora, IL; a brother-in-law, Bruce Van Dever of Keokuk, IA; several nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three sisters, Hazel Washburn,

Chloe Nelson and Mabel Bishop; and sister-in-law, Carole Van Dever.

Norman graduated from Keokuk High School in 1935 and in 1940 completed a Tool and Die apprenticeship with Wm. B. Beaty Machine Works at Keokuk. He had been a tool and die worker at the Iowa Ordinance Plant in Middletown, IA from 1941 until 1945 and then farmed in Clark County until 1958. In 1980 he retired from Shaeffer Pen in Fort Madison after 25 years of employment.

Norman was of the Methodist faith and a former Mason. He enjoyed hunting, fishing,

making arrowheads, glass etching, and playing cards with friends. He and Doris were avid bowlers and enjoyed going to Las Vegas and to riverboat casinos.

Funeral services are Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Friends can call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with family receiving friends 5-7 p.m.

Memorial are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Clark Co. Long-beards (J.A.K.E.S.)
