Joyce Suzanne Johnson, age 56, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO.

She was born August 5, 1947 at Boone, IA, a daughter of Edward and Ione McClain Gilbert.

On October 31, 1967, she was united in marriage to Bob Johnson at Oxnard, CA.

Survivors include her husband, Bob, of St. Joseph, MO; one son, Brian Johnson of Anchorage, AK; her parents, Edward and Ione Gilbert of Kahoka, MO; father-in-law and mother-in-law,Carl and Vi Johnson of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Richard Gilbert and his wife, Teresa, of Keokuk, IA; a sister, Rose McAfee and her companion, Rusty Smith, of Kahoka, MO; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Don Johnson of Olive Branch, MS, Glen and Dixie Johnson of Kansas City, MO, Barb and Kevin Lyon of Olathe, KS, and Beverly and Steven Heathman of Atoka, TN; nieces and nephews: Aleta and Monti Shinkle of New London, IA, Shawn and Roberta McAfee, Monty and Alyce McAfee, Jared and Jill McAfee and Daniel and Shelby McAfee, all of Kahoka, MO, Sandra Johnson of California, Chad Johnson of Illinois, Shawn and Jennifer Johnson of Olathe, KS, Shannon Johnson of Abilene, TX, and Steven Heathman, II and Brianna Heathman both of Atoka, TN; great nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jasper and Gladys Gilbert and Azel and Emma McClain; a special aunt, Olive Evans and her husband, Arthur; and an uncle, Vernon McClain.

Joyce graduated from Kahoka High School in 1965 and attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, IL. She was of the Catholic faith. Joyce was an Army wife and in February of 1976 joined the Army herself, serving in active duty until August 6, 1981 as a personnel specialist. While in the service, she served in Colorado Springs, CO, Wiesbaden, Germany, Fairbanks, AK, and Phoenix, AZ. As a result of their years in the service, they were able to do extensive traveling, visiting many foreign countries. After her discharge she was a Resource Clerk for the U.S. Forestry Service in Dorles, CO and was later transferred to Anchorage, AK, where she was promoted to a Resource Account Technician. She and Bob made their home in Alaska until she retired this past May and moved to St. Joseph in September. They had went on many Alaskan remote wilderness hunts and also on many other hunting trips.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Shawn McAfee and Father Roland Carbone officiating.

Family will meet friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
