Janet L. Nixon, 87, of Kahoka, MO passed away peacefully at 10:15 am on Friday, November 3rd, 2023, at the Clark County Nursing Home in Kahoka where she had resided since July 2023. Janet was born on July 23, 1936, as one of a set of twins to Ralph E. and Edna F. (Saar) Shankster. She was a 1954 Graduate of Kahoka High School and from there she continued her education and was a 1957 graduate of Blessing School of Nursing in Quincy, IL. She met the love of her life Keith Nixon at a Mobil gas station in Kahoka, and they were married August 4, 1957, in a double wedding along with her twin sister Janese and Gene Davis at the St Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka, MO.
Janet is survived by her beloved children; Kristy Webber of Kahoka, Kimberly (Tony) Daniel of Kahoka, Kelly (Rodney) Hirtzer of Nashville, Tennessee, and Douglas (Lisa) Nixon of Chesterfield, MO. 7 Grandchildren who loving referred to her as “Gam Gam”; Kristin (Kaleb) Thompson, Schuyler (Ashley) Lovell, Carrington (Carrie) Daniel, Kayli (Jared) Kepko, Samuel Nixon, Lily Nixon and Sophia Nixon. 4 Step Grandchildren; Walter (Stephanie) Webber, Donald (Dani) Webber, Victoria (Jared) Tetuan and Clinton (Jenna) Hirtzer, 7 Great Grands; Liam and Lynlee Lovell, Linden and Lawson Daniel, Kaldwell and Kallen Thompson, and Maeve LaNet Kepko, 3 Step Great Grandchildren; Iva and Emery Webber and Westin Johnson. Janet is also survived by one Brother in-law; Gene Davis, one Sister in-law; Opal Nixon, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Edna Shankster, her husband Keith, her in-laws Arthur and Merle Nixon, son-in-law; Jerry Webber, step grandson; Cole Johnson, two sisters; Janese Davis, Patricia Stubbs, two brothers-in-law; Charles Stubbs and Carroll Nixon, two nephews; Jerry Davis and Jay Nixon, and her two pooches Spencer and Lilly.
Janet began her professional career working as a floor nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa. In 1961 she began working at the Clark County Health Departments and retired after 40 years in 2001. After retirement Janet became the Revere School nurse, this brought her much joy working with the students and staff. Janet served on numerous State and County Boards during her life. Administrator for the 1st Bi-County Home Health Dept with the State of Mo, The Clark County Heroine Wellness Health Department Collation Board, Clark County Local Cancer Fund board, Clark County Home Health Advisory Board, Northeast Council on Aging Board, Regional Girl Scout Council and Leader Board, Northeast Missouri Regional Planning Board. In 2017 The Lt. Governor of State of Missouri awarded her with the Senior Service Award. Janet was also awarded the Nurse of The Year that was presented by the Blessing Hospital School of Nursing Alumni. Janet was a member and previous Past Worthy Matron for the Eastern Star, A Charter member of Tuesday Club. Janet also enjoyed participating in the Country Comes Home held in Kahoka. Janet loved to entertain and welcomed you with open arms at her home. In her spare time Janet enjoyed shopping, a good card game and baking for family and friends.
Funeral Services for Janet Nixon will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the St Paul United Church of Kahoka. Pastor Shawn McAfee and Rev Dan Moore will officiate. Interment will follow at the St Paul Cemetery Kahoka, MO. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 7th, 2023, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with an Order of Eastern Star Rite Service at 5:00 pm. Memorial contributions in memory of Janet Nixon are suggested to Clark County Local Cancer Fund, Industrial Opportunities or Clark County Marching Indians.
