Jackie J. Chapman, 90, of Union, Missouri went home to his Heavenly Father on Oct. 29, 2024 at the Hermann District Hospital in Hermann, Missouri.
He was born the son of Jesse R. and JoHannah T. Petersen-Chapman on June 6, 1934 in Anita, Iowa. The family moved to Clark County, Missouri in 1936 – first living near Fox City and then south of Kahoka and finally to home place 2 miles east of Granger when he was about 5. He graduated from Granger High School in 1952 where he was president of the senior class and co-captain of the basketball team as well as member of the baseball team.
He worked for the Swift Company in Keokuk after graduation and then the Iowa Ordinance Plant near Burlington. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army in December, 1953 – did basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas – and was stationed in Hoist, Germany near Frankfurt for 2 years in the combat engineers receiving the rank of corporal and being in charge of the motor pool. He returned to the states – attended Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College (now Truman University) for a semester. He went by correspondence school at LaSalle University in Chicago, Illinois receiving a certificate in Basic Accounting.
He married Marjorie Darlene Howell on August 19, 1956 at the Arbela Baptist Church in Arbela. They became the parents of a daughter – Phyllis L. (Shelly) Chapman in Sept. 1957. He went to work for the Missouri Highway Department in January, 1956 and also worked for local farmers and at Dean Lewis’ gas station in Kahoka as well as being a Missouri licensed basketball referee. He then went to work for J. Burdman Auto Parts in Kahoka in the early 1960’s. He won a number of salesmanship awards and certificates with Burdman’s, headquartered in Kirksville, Missouri.
In 1980, he and his wife started their own business, Jack’s Auto Parts, Inc. associated with NAPA and retired in 2002 after more than 40 years in the auto parts industry. He was involved in a number of community organizations while in Kahoka but most proud of his membership in the Gideon organization. He served on the Clark County Ambulance board and the Northeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission.
Accepted the Lord as his savior at the age of 16 and read the Bible through a number of times – served as a deacon among other offices at the Southern Baptist Church of Wayland and attended Grace Baptist Church in Union. He was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan and had attended games at all the stadiums in St. Louis.
He is survived by his wife, daughter, and a niece Shirley (Robert) Sinclair of Burlington, Iowa and a nephew Keith (Janese) Hobart of Palm Bay, Florida, a great niece and nephew; great-great nieces and nephews and great-great-great nieces and nephews, brother-in-law Darrell (Sue) Howell of Rockford, Illinois and Larry Carlin of Kahoka.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters – Mary A. Chapman and Betty Hobart and brother-in-law Keith Hobart and sister-in-law Arlene Carlin.
Graveside Services with Military Rites for Jackie J Chapman will be held Friday, November 1, 2024, at 11:00 am at Kahoka Cemetery, Kahoka, MO. Pastor Dan Steinbeck will officiate.
