FLOSSIE V. PHILLIPS

Flossie V. Phillips, age 87, of rural Fort Madison, IA, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the West Point Care Center in West Point, IA.

She was born April 11, 1922, at Wheeling, MO, a daughter of David and Maude Wells Mikels.

On April 22, 1955, she was united in marriage to Elmer G. Phillips at Keosauqua, IA.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer G. Phillips, of rural Fort Madison, IA; one son, Carl Grindstaff and his wife, Sandra, of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a daughter, Nadine A. Hodges and her husband, Paul, of West Point, IA; step-son, Gary Phillips and his wife, Linda, of Selma, IA; step-daughters, Paula Nixon and Pam Jackson of Washington, IA; seven grandchildren: Darren Grindstaff of Iowa City, IA, Kevin Grindstaff of Iowa City, IA, Cindy and Tim Padley of Moss Point, MS, Timothy Hodges of Burlington, IA, Christina Stepps of Middletown, IA, Catherine and Mike Brown of Burlington, IA, and Cheyenne Phillips of Selma, IA; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Michael Hodges; and brothers and sisters: Walter, Floyd, Carl and Andy Mikels, Florence Dreadin, Fern Gregory and Faye Lemons.

Flossie graduated from Exline (Iowa) High School. She worked at the I.A.A.P. in Middletown, IA, and for 10 years at Sheaffer Pen in Fort Madison. She and Elmer owned and operated the Blue Ribbon Tap for seven years in West Point until selling to her daughter, Nadine and son-in-law, Paul Hodges.

Flossie always kept busy, whether on the job, working in her garden, cooking or canning. She loved looking for mushrooms, hunting game and arrowheads, collecting rocks. In later years she spent time quilting and spending time with her family.

At Mrs. Phillips request, cremation rites were accorded and there will be no visitation or services.
