Edward “Sonny” VanVelkinburgh, 83, of Kahoka, Missouri, passed away peacefully at 5:28 am on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the Clark County Nursing Home, in Kahoka, Missouri.
Edward was born on October 22, 1941, in Keokuk, IA, to Lewis E and Margaret L (Young) VanVelkinburgh. He was a graduate of Keokuk High School. After high school he enlisted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Hawaii for four years and later honorably discharged. Sonny then moved to Kahoka. On July 11, 1983, he was united in marriage to Dorothy J (Thorton) VanVelkinburgh at the First Baptist Church in Wayland, MO, and she preceded him in death September 2, 2014. Sonny was simple, he was a good carpenter, always reliable and worked for many in the community. He worked many years for Neill Mckee as his right-hand man. Sonny enjoyed working for Neill and appreciated the many friendships he made.
Sonny is survived by his stepson Steven (Elizabeth) Colella of Keokuk, IA, his daughters Karen (Jack) Guardino of Lindenhurst, IL, Roseann (Johnny) Mohon of Rome, GA, Debra Colella of Camden, TN, Bonnie (Tim) Creamer of Beach Park, IL, many grandchildren, several great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, daughters Sandra Pickle, Joann Heibner, his sons Terry VanVelkinburgh, Donald Colella, Phillip Colella.
According to his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorials contributions can be made to the grandson Duston Colella to help with expenses.
