Dorothy June VanVelkinburgh, age 82, of Kahoka, MO, passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2014 in Keokuk Area Hospital.

Dorothy was born April 20, 1932 in Chicago, IL, a daughter of Ralph and Viola Gerber Thornton.

On July 11,1983 she was united in marriage to Edward "Sonny" VanVelkinburgh at the First Baptist Church in Wayland, MO.

Survivors include her husband, "Sonny", of Kahoka; three sons: Philip (Darla) Colella of Ft. Worth, TX, Robert Colella of Keokuk, IA, and Steven (Elizabeth) Colella of Keokuk, IA; five daughters: Joann Heibner of Clarksville, TN, Karen (Jack) Guardino of Lindenhurst, IL, Roseann (Johnny) Mohon of Rome, GA, Debra Colella of Winchester, KY, and Bonnie (Tim) Creamer of Beach Park, IL; two sisters-in-law, Delores (Leroy) Knoch of Fort Madison, IA and Marilyn (Vernon) Hodges of Big Sandy, TN; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sandra Pickle; two sons, Donald Colella and Terry VanVelkinburgh; and her brothers and sisters.

She was a loving mother who enjoyed her role as homemaker. She loved to sing and dance and each of her loved ones looked forward to their birthdays when Dorothy would call and sing to Happy Birthday to them! Her faith was very important to her and she enjoyed her fellowship with the First Baptist Church in Wayland. She especially loved having company and being around her family and friends.

Memorial services were held Friday, September 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Wayland. Family received friends from 10 a.m. Friday at the church until time of services. There wase no other visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

The family was assisted by Wilson Funeral Home.
