Donald “Doc” Dieterich, 100, of Kahoka, passed away at 8:20 am, on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at the Scotland County Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Donald was born April 28, 1923 to Louis Hurley and Lelian Esther (Gibson) Dieterich. He attended school in Medill and Chambersburg, MO. On September 16, 1946 he married Wilma (Kaylor) Dieterich and they were blessed with 74 years together.
Doc worked as a farm hand until he joined the Navy. He served in the Navy from October 1944 until July 2, 1946. After being discharged from the Navy he worked at the Kahoka Cheese Company for Reid VanVlack and at Kaser Construction Company until he retired in 1988. After retirement, he worked part-time for Sammon in Keokuk, Iowa and for Kenny Ball at Volvo in Kahoka. He “officially” retired at the age of 90. He was a member of the Herman Blum American Legion Post #192 for 76 years. In April of 2011 Doc along with his life-long friend Harold Gares went on the Great River Honor Flight. Brian Hillyer served as their guardian on this unforgetable trip. Doc and Wilma loved to square dance, bowl and play cards with friends in their younger lives.
He was a life-long member of the Kahoka United Methodist Church and was a regular attendee of Sunday School and church. He could be found helping with dinners, selling tickets for the Fall Festival and Ladies Night Out, painting, cleaning or anything else needed to keep the church going. Doc loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. The grandchildren loved when he took them for ice cream in his truck and let them drive his riding lawn mower. He was always there for his family. He was well known in the community, always there to help anyone and always had a smile and friendly hello whenever you saw him. He didn’t require much to be happy. If you knew Doc, you knew someone very special and you knew you were special to him.
Donald is survived by 2 daughters; Virginia (Steven) Brammer of Kahoka, MO and Rebecca (Charles) McClain of Prosper, TX; 4 grandchildren; Elliott (Amy) Brammer, Marisa (Jon) Kerns, Angela (Justin) Duke and Paul (Ashley) McClain; 9 great grandchildren and 1 step grandchild. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, 3 brothers; Russell, Craig “Tuff” and Robert “Buck”, and 1 sister Florene Ruble.
Funeral services for Donald will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home of Kahoka with Full Military Rites at the Funeral Home. Pastor Shawn McAfee will officiate. Inurnment at the Kahoka Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of services at the Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home. In Lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Doc are suggested to the Great River Honor Flight or Herman Blum American Legion Post 192.
