Bessie Hardy

October 21, 1930 — November 14, 2018

Bessie Louise Hardy, age 88, formerly of Luray, MO, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2018 in the Clark Co. Nursing Home in Kahoka.

Bessie was born October 21, 1930 in Luray, MO, a daughter of Henry and Bessie Thompson Calvert. With the exception of the time spent in the nursing home, Bessie spent her entire life near her home where she was born.

On September 9, 1951, she was united in marriage to Kenneth D. Hardy at the Methodist parsonage in Kahoka. He preceded her in death on December 13, 2009.

Survivors include one son, Dan Hardy, of Luray, MO; four grandchildren: Susan (Lee) Schmitz of Wyaconda, MO, Duane (Jennifer) Hardy of Columbia, MO, Allison McDaniel of Luray, MO and Summer Hardy and her fiancé, Jacob Miller, of Mendon, IL; six great-grandchildren: Kathrynn, Jonathan, and William Schmitz, Ben and Olivia Hardy, and Matthew Manton; also a brother-in-law, Robert (Blanche) Hardy of Denmark, IA; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers: Newt, Ward, and Hollis Calvert; and two sister, Hilda Banks and Sarah Griggs.

Bessie graduated from the Luray High School in 1949 and attended college at Kirksville.

A farm wife most of her life, she took pride in making her house a home. For several years she babysat neighborhood children, loving them as her own. When her mother became a resident of the Clark Co. Nursing Home, she joined the housekeeping staff, working there for over 15 years.

She will be remembered by those she leaves behind for her love of cooking, trying new recipes, and making sure no guest left hungry. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening. Reading the Bible and sharing her faith with others was very important to her. She was baptized into Christ at the age of thirteen at the Luray United Methodist Church and was an active member as long as her health permitted, playing the piano for church and teaching Sunday School.

Her greatest pleasure was spending time with her family and friends. She was always ready to play a game or put together a puzzle with her grandkids, but only after the dishes were done.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at the Luray United Methodist Church with Donna Reid officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashton Cemetery.

Family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 p.m. until services at 2 p.m. at the Luray United Methodist Church.

Memorials are suggested to the Luray United Methodist Church or the Ashton Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka.
