ALBERTA L. HAGERMAN
Alberta Louise Hagerman, age 84, of Wayland, MO, died Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL where she had been a patient for one day.
She was born November 6, 1921 at St. Francisville, MO, a daughter of Edgar Alonzo and Susie Catherine Wilsey Kinkeade.
She was united in marriage to George Bernard Hagerman on November 6, 1941, in Mexico, MO. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1980.
Survivors include one brother, Walter H. Kinkeade and his wife, Mary Alice, of Kahoka, MO; two sisters, Nina DeVore of Reno, NV and Mary Jeanette Christensen of Cheyenne, WY;brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Stuart Hagerman of Keokuk, IA Donald Hagerman of Forest Lake, MN, Frances Egan of Ventura, CA and Ruth Kinkeade of Irvin, TX; dear friends, Delbert and Donna Drummond of Wayland, MO and their families; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Dr. Henry Kinkeade.
Alberta graduated from Wayland High School in 1939. She had been very active in preparing an alumni annual reunion for the past several years. Following high school graduation she attended Spencer Business College in Hannibal, MO. She then served as secretary to the Clark Co. Extension Agent, University of MO, for two years then as Deputy County Clerk of Clark County for 16 years from 1943-1959. She was active in Extension and the Wayland Extension Club had been organized in her home in April of 1945. She held all offices in local club, also county, and was elected president of the Missouri Extension Homemakers and served from 1974-76. In 1977 she served as Co-chairman for the National Extension Homemakers Council meeting held in Columbia, MO. She then served as a member of the Presidents Advisory Committee of the University of Mo. for two years. In 1982 she received the Award of Merit from Gamma Sigma Delta, the Honor Society of Agriculture and had the distinction of being the first woman to receive the award in Missouri. In 1983, she was elected to serve a three year term as a member of the United National Committee for world wide organization of Associated Country Women of the World, and traveled to London Headquarters as a volunteer for nine meetings of the committee. As a member of the United Nations Committee she represented Missouri Extension Homemakers who sponsored her nomination. In 1989 she was asked to be a guest speaker at the 75th Anniversary Celebration for University Extension held on May 8, 1989. In 1990, she received the Presidential citation for Alumni Service from the University of Mo. Extension on the occasion of the Sixteenth Annual Legislative Day held January 30, 1990. She was also elected to serve on the National Foundation of Extension Homemakers, Inc. which was formed to provide administration and financial support for programs that benefit families.
Memberships have included the Canton Business Women's Club, the LaGrange Garden Club, former District Director of Northeast District of Garden Clubs of Missouri, former State Citations Chairman and Chaplain for the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, Kahoka Chapter # 40, Order of the Eastern Star, a charter member of the Clark County Historical Society, co-chairman of the Republican Party in Clark County, the Illiamo Model T Club and the Southeast Iowa Antique Car Club. Alberta was also a board member of the American Cancer Society in Clark County and very active in the Relay for Life. She was also a member of the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary and the Clematis Garden Club.
Alberta was very active in her local church, Southern Baptist Fellowship, Wayland, MO, serving in many ways and was elected to serve as a member of the Executive Board of Missouri Baptist Convention, 1969-1975. She also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Hannibal LaGrange College, holding office during several terms. She also served as WMU Director of the Wyaconda Baptist Association, and as director and assistant clerk of the Mt. Salem/Wyaconda Association. She was also a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Alberta was a valued member of society and most of her time was spent promoting the needs of others. Her main desire was to share the love and saving grace of Jesus.
At her request, she was accorded cremation rites. A memorial service will be held
Sunday, August 13, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with inurnment following in Sand Cemetery at St. Francisville, MO. Officiating the service will be her pastor, Dan Steinbeck. Friends can call at Wilson Funeral Home after 10 a.m. on Saturday with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Southern Baptist Fellowship Church for their new sign.
